When Should You Re-Seal Your Marble or Granite Countertops?

/ / Countertops, Tips And Trends

Knowing when to re-seal your natural stone countertops depends largely on the type, color, and density of the stone. Marble and granite have different characteristics, and as a result, they require sealing at different intervals.

Marble vs. Granite Sealing Frequency

Because marble is a softer and more porous natural stone, marble countertops require sealing more frequently than granite. In general, marble countertops should be re-sealed every few months to help protect against staining and moisture absorption.

Granite countertops, on the other hand, are denser and less porous. Many granite countertops can go several years before re-sealing is necessary, depending on the stone and how heavily the surface is used.

Stone density also plays a key role. The denser the granite, the less porous it is—and the less often it needs to be sealed. Darker granite colors are typically denser and require less frequent sealing, while lighter granites, such as certain Indian stones like Colonial White, benefit from thorough and more regular sealing.

How to Test If Your Countertops Need Re-Sealing?

A simple water test can help determine whether your countertop sealer is still effective:

  1. Pour a small amount of clean water onto the countertop surface.
  2. If the sealer is working properly, the water should bead up.
  3. Let the water sit for a few minutes, then wipe it away with a clean cloth.

If you notice the stone has darkened where the water was sitting, this means moisture has penetrated the surface and your countertop needs to be re-sealed. If there is no darkening, the sealer is still effective, and re-sealing is not necessary at this time.

Any temporary darkening caused by water will fade as the moisture evaporates, returning the stone to its original appearance. Please feel free to contact Euro Stone Craft with any questions you may have.

Do Countertops Need to Be Sealed Professionally?

Professional sealing is not required, but it can be helpful.

Many water-based, food-safe stone sealers are available for homeowners and can be purchased at most home improvement stores, such as Home Depot. If you choose to seal your countertops yourself, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

If you prefer professional service, Euro Stone Craft is happy to assist. Our countertop re-sealing service typically costs approximately $5 per square foot, ensuring proper application and long-lasting protection for your natural stone surfaces. We serve the entire greater Washington DC metro area, including Northern Virginia, Washington DC, and Southern Maryland.

Should You Seal Quartz Countertops?

No—quartz countertops should never be sealed. Quartz is a man-made, engineered stone that is non-porous, meaning it does not absorb liquids and does not require sealing at any time.

It’s important not to confuse quartz with quartzite. While the names sound similar, they are very different materials. Quartz countertops are engineered products made from natural quartz crystals combined with resins and pigments. Quartzite, on the other hand—such as Taj Mahal Quartzite—is a natural stone and does require sealing to protect it from moisture and staining.

If you’re unsure whether your countertop is quartz or a natural stone like quartzite, the team at Euro Stone Craft is always happy to help you identify your surface and recommend the proper care.
